The brief
What the client asked for.
Hip-to-gable conversion with rear dormer. Two double bedrooms, en-suite, generous head height. Drawn, calc-ed and through Building Control in under three weeks.

The challenge
What we were up against.
1930s semi with a hipped roof, usable head height was under 2m at the ridge before any work. Existing trussed rafter roof had to be stripped out completely and replaced with a cut roof. Party wall step at the gable end meant the new masonry needed careful tying back.
The solution
How we drew it.
New gable wall built off the existing party wall up to the new ridge, tied with proprietary wall ties at every fourth course. Cut-roof design with new ridge beam and rafter sizing handled in-house. Rear dormer kept square to maximise floor area; flat roof with single-ply membrane to keep the dormer height down.
The structural calcs were the best we've had, our builder said it was the easiest steel schedule to price he'd seen all year.
